Monkey see, monkey do, eh? No sooner do we learn that SDHC will eventually morph into SDXC with a capacity limit of 2TB than Sony and SanDisk announce that the Memory Stick PRO / Memory Stick Micro will soon reach that same ceiling. In fact, the announcement is so new that the format doesn't even have a name (something along the lines of Extended High Capacity, probably), giving both of the formats the ability to reach 2TB on a single card. If all goes to plan, production should get going on the new formats sometime this year, so it's safe to say the race to a new top is officially on.Filed under: CES, Storage
There's no more details on the format beyond that, unfortunately, but the pair has also announced that they're working on a new Memory Stick HG Micro format as well, which promises to boast a blazing 60MBps maximum data transfer speed. That's made possible, in part, thanks to a new 8-bit parallel interface with an increased 60MHz interface clock frequency. Sadly, there's no indication of a release date either of 'em, with the companies only going so far as to say that format licensing for both new formats is "scheduled to start in 2009."Filed under: Storage

With the money well all dried up and a monumental transition looming, Barack Obama's transition team is urging Congress to take a second look at letting the cutover take place as planned on February 17th. According to a letter recently sent to Capital Hill, John Podesta, co-chair of the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team, stated: "With coupons unavailable, support and education insufficient, and the most vulnerable Americans exposed, I urge you to consider a change to the legislatively-mandated analog cutoff date." Quite frankly, this has the potential to be huge. When would it be rescheduled to? Would additional fundage be applied? How would broadcasters react? Obviously, we shouldn't have to wait long to see how this all pans out.
We caught wind of this one just a few days back, but once the show floor opened we were finally able to feast our eyes on one. We've gotta say -- it looks mighty good, so feel free to have a look in the gallery below to see if you agree.

Talk about covering all of your bases. ViewSonic has unloaded a netbook, a 3D LCD and a 3D projector here at CES, but it has somehow found the time to also unload not one, not eight, but nine new digital photo frames. It's adding in the 7-inch VFM735-52M, 8-inch VFM835-52M and 10-inch VFM1035W-52M to its SwifTouch lineup for $129, $159 and $189, respectively, and it's also busting out a full line of 4:3 frames for those still deathly afraid of widescreen. Finally, it's previewing a pair of all-in-one frames with inbuilt alarm clocks and AM / FM radio, both of which are on track for a Q2 release at $99.Filed under: CES, Digital Cameras, Displays

While most folks will apparently have to wait at least a few more weeks to get their hands on a six-cell battery for their HP Mini 1000, Xavier Lanier of Notebooks.com was able to snag one a tad early and, whilst he was showing off the stash of gadgets hidden in his Scott eVest, he gave everyone a little glimpse of it. As you can sort of see above, it expectedly adds a bit of bulk to the otherwise slim Mini 1000, but we're guessing that's a more than acceptable trade-off for those craving some extra runtime. Still no word on a price or exact release date just yet, unfortunately, but those details should be popping up before too long. Hit up the link below for the full, slightly less blurry video.
The SyncMaster 930ND is a 19-inch PC-over-IP-enabled display developed with Teradici Corporation that sports four USB connectors, 2-way audio, and DVI-out for a secondary display. For gamers, the 22-inch 2233RZ is an NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision-compatible monitor, due to hit the streets in April for an MSRP of $349. And rounding out the collection, the company has added two more DisplayLink monitors to the mix: the SyncMaster D190SU (19-inch) and D220SU (22-inch). No word on a release date or price for this one, but you'll know as soon as we do.

In addition to the rather ho-hum face detection we see so often these days, this claims to be the first camera with facial recognition: it keeps track of your favorite faces, prioritizing them when focusing in the future. Also included is a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, integrated MP3 player, Digital Image Stabilization, Smart Scene Recognition and more. This bad boy will be available from February 2009, priced at £179 (roughly $270).

Totally over the top and ridiculously expensive, Kodak's 7.6-inch OLED picture frame is still a serious want. The image was every bit as beautiful as we expected but surprised us with the frame's ability to playback HD video in such a fluid manner. The touch-controls along the bezel did what we wanted with little thought, albeit, with some lag. Not horrible but certainly annoying if we ever decide to hand Kodak $1,000 to take one home.

The Pogoplug USB to NAS adapter is really in a class of its won. Not only does it do the obvious -- allow you to turn any USB hard drive into a NAS -- but it is also has a built in web server. But no, they didn't stop there, for $79 you also get (in our best Billy Maze voice) a web service accessible at Pogoplug.com that gives you the same convenient access to your files anywhere on the internet via either a web browser or the file manager of your choice. There is also a slick little iPhone app available for free.

What's up with companies suddenly not wanting to call their netbooks, um, netbooks? Sony's Mike Abary sat down with LaptopMag in order to discuss the VAIO P, and as always, the company didn't hesitate to shoot off a few more-than-controversial tidbits. For starters, Mr. Abary insinuated that the 8-inch machine wasn't actually a good fit for the netbook category, noting that "the type of premium customer it is targeting probably doesn't even know what a netbook is." Furthermore, he reckoned that around 60% of prospective VAIO P buyers would be women, and it doesn't view 12-inch laptops as a threat. If you're hungry for even more one-liners that you can jump all over, head on down to the read link -- just remember, yelling at your LCD doesn't do anyone any good.Filed under: CES, Laptops

Got an itch for a gaming laptop that's big enough to span the laps of both you and your lover? ASUS has you covered. Here in the desert, the outfit has introduced a potent 18.4-inch gaming rig with a 1080p panel, twin ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPUs, three RAM slots (a world's first, mind you) stuffed with 6GB of DDR2 memory, a Core 2 Duo processor, a half dozen (seriously) Altec Lansing speakers and a Turbo Gear function that will enable users to overclock the system and boost performance by as much as 25%. A few more configurations are available, including one with a 17-inch panel, an NVIDIA graphics option, dual HDDs, an optional Blu-ray drive and enough ports to put your average desktop to shame.Filed under: Laptops

Dell has been pretty laptop-heavy at CES so far, but it looks to be balancing things out a bit today, with it introducing its new gamer-minded XPS 625 desktop. This one is AMD through and through, and includes your choice of AMD Phenom or Phenom II Black Edition processors, ATI Radeon HD4670 or HD4850 graphics cards (in single or CrossFireX configurations), and some other suitably high-end specs all around, including up 8GB of RAM, a whole host of hard drive options and, of course, an AlienFX custom lighting system to remind you just why you bought it. Best of all, prices start at a reasonable $999 for a decently-equipped system, and you can get your order in right now.

ViewSonic has just introduced a new computing line geared towards the netbook / nettop set. All three Atom-based machines sport Windows XP Home, a 1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM and 160GB storage. VieBook is a 10.2-inch netbook with all the usual connectivity options and an MSRP of $429. The VPC100 ViePC is an all-in-one device, measuring a mere 35mm thin, with an 18.5-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD screen and should be priced at $549. Rounding up the lineup, the LinkPC is a nettop, designed to be strapped to the back of any VESA compatible monitor, and has an MSRP of $399. The latter becomes available sometime in March, while the other two will be doing their thing in February.

Continue reading ViewSonic launches Atom-based computing line
